The power of light therapy: restorative, healing, soothing

IPL: Broad spectrum therapeutic light treatment

Intense Pulsed Light technology delivers intense pulses of non-coherent light over a broad spectrum of wavelengths from 500nm to 1200nm.  The spectral range of light (green, yellow, red and infrared) is capable of targeting a range of structures or chromophores simultaneously, and these are heated to the point of destruction.

  • IPL devices have a range of cut-off filters to limit the light wave emissions, particularly at the lower end of the spectrum. The ability to treat various targets with the same device by applying different filters is a feature of IPL devices.
  • Relatively large spot sizes mean the number of pulses per treatment area can be reduced, resulting in efficient treatment times.

Light Emitting Diode light technology, or photodynamic therapy has been known for its therapeutic qualities for over 200 years. Over the past 40 years, many research projects have demonstrated that it is highly effective for skin treatments.

Light Spectrum

Both IPL and LED technologies use a broad spectrum of light waves for defined therapeutic benefit.

IPL Treatment Indications

  • Vascular lesions
  • Permanent hair removal/reduction
  • Pigmented lesions and multiple types of dyschromia
  • Skin rejuvenation therapy for wrinkles, lax and ageing skin

LED Treatment Indications

  • General skin and hair therapy
  • Improved healing times
  • Pain relief
  • Companion treatment to optimise laser, IPL, RF and other skin treatments
Anti-Ageing: Combats wrinkles and increases collagen production for smoother, younger-looking skin.
Cell Rejuvenation: Increases cell regeneration and renewal.
Anti-acne and Teeth Whitening: Eliminates acne-causing bacteria, reduces acne and whitens teeth.
Skin Soothing: Calms and soothes irritated skin. Helps reduce capillaries.
Skin Balancing: Helps even the skin tone.
Reduces Redness: Helps to alleviate the redness associated with inflammation, sunburn and rosacea.

The Cryomed View

Cryomed sees a strong role for IPL technology in an aesthetic practice, treating a broad range of skin indications. One impressive area of recent development has been in the area of multi-platform devices, such as Etherea MX. Based on our view of the market and the new generation of IPL devices, we expect to see even wider and more effective clinical applications of IPL,
particularly capitalising on combined treatment modalities.

We view LED therapy as an overall skin wellness therapy that helps to optimise the outcome of other treatments, but also offers excellent value as a stand-alone therapy for skin health and rejuvenation. Patients find LED therapy both relaxing and beneficial, and it is therefore an excellent way to encourage repeat clinic visits. We have sourced the most
advanced technology yet available in this area.
