IPL: Broad spectrum therapeutic light treatment
Intense Pulsed Light technology delivers intense pulses of non-coherent light over a broad spectrum of wavelengths from 500nm to 1200nm. The spectral range of light (green, yellow, red and infrared) is capable of targeting a range of structures or chromophores simultaneously, and these are heated to the point of destruction.
- IPL devices have a range of cut-off filters to limit the light wave emissions, particularly at the lower end of the spectrum. The ability to treat various targets with the same device by applying different filters is a feature of IPL devices.
- Relatively large spot sizes mean the number of pulses per treatment area can be reduced, resulting in efficient treatment times.
Light Emitting Diode light technology, or photodynamic therapy has been known for its therapeutic qualities for over 200 years. Over the past 40 years, many research projects have demonstrated that it is highly effective for skin treatments.
Both IPL and LED technologies use a broad spectrum of light waves for defined therapeutic benefit.
